In 1978, an oil-survey plane over the Yucatán coast of Mexico traced half a circle, 110 miles wide, buried a mile underground. The geophysicist who mapped it reported it. It was filed away as a volcano. Two years later, Luis and Walter Alvarez proposed that a six-mile asteroid killed the dinosaurs, and most experts said no, because nobody could find the crater. This is the story of how the world lost the Chicxulub crater for twelve years, who finally connected the dots, and what the rock said when scientists drilled into it in 2016.
