Welcome to Physics With William — your calm place to unwind, relax, and gently drift into sleep while exploring one of the most remarkable ways energy can become matter.
Tonight, we softly explore pair production — the process by which sufficiently energetic light can create real particles.
For the simplest example, producing an electron and a positron requires at least enough energy to account for both of their rest masses: about 1.022 million electron volts in total. In practice, momentum must also be conserved, so the process usually involves another particle or another photon.
When it happens, the photon’s energy is transformed into mass, motion, and the quantum properties of the newly created particles. Light has not turned into matter in a magical sense — energy has simply changed form according to the rules of relativity and quantum field theory.
The reverse can happen too. When an electron and positron annihilate, their mass can return to the universe as photons.
Take a slow breath, imagine a packet of light carrying enough energy to become a pair of particles, and let Physics With William carry you into calm — where even matter and light can quietly transform into one another.
