Welcome to Physics With William — your calm place to unwind, relax, and gently drift into sleep while exploring the surprisingly slow journey of energy through the Sun.
Tonight, we softly explore the photon random walk — the reason energy created deep inside the Sun can take an extraordinarily long time to reach its surface.
Photons produced in the Sun’s core cannot simply fly straight outward. The solar interior is incredibly dense, so light is constantly scattered, absorbed, and re-emitted by charged particles, changing direction again and again.
Instead of traveling directly to the surface, the energy follows something like a random walk — taking countless tiny steps in unpredictable directions. Although light moves at the speed of light between interactions, this endless wandering can make the overall journey last tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of years depending on the estimate.
And it is not really one individual photon surviving the entire trip. The original energy is repeatedly transferred between radiation and matter until new photons finally emerge from the Sun’s surface.
Take a slow breath, imagine energy slowly wandering outward through the glowing interior of the Sun, taking countless tiny steps before finally escaping into space, and let Physics With William carry you into calm — where even light can take the long way home.
