A slow-burning folk-soul ballad about surrender, change and honest love, where fire strips away the mask and leaves the true self standing bare on frozen ground. The song opens with old bark falling away and something green pushing through, leaving the singer bare and unsure what is ash and what is gold. A fire is described that does not burn the singer down, taking only the stone statue and the painted mask while leaving no hollow in the ground. Everyday images of the kettle, the same chair and an empty frame show that the lie is gone even though the shape of it remains, and love is said to wait inside the smoke rather than take the burning off the singer's hands. In the end the fire is asked to burn off the wish to look whole and the habit of closing like a fist, but to keep the voice, the temper and the way, while the singer stands in the flame not knowing what will grow. #fire #transformation #honesty #ballad
