Go behind the scenes with Campbellsville University Harrodsburg men’s basketball as the Pioneers travel to Louisiana for the first NCAA Division I game in program history against Nicholls State on December 29, 2018. Footage captured by Sports Information Director Alston Geers, on his first official trip since being hired by the program.
The matchup came during the inaugural season of Harrodsburg men’s basketball and was just the fifth varsity game ever played by the program. Competing in the USCAA at the time, the young Pioneers were given the opportunity of a lifetime — stepping onto an NCAA Division I floor only weeks into the program’s existence.
This archival footage captures the experience beyond the game itself, including the Pioneers’ shootaround, pregame preparations and postgame scenes from inside the locker room.
During the pregame shootaround, Assistant Coach and Athletic Director Dalton Christopher prepares the Pioneers for the challenge of facing a Division I opponent. With Harrodsburg facing a significant size disadvantage, Christopher emphasizes turning that disadvantage into a strength — relying on the Pioneers’ guards to create opportunities against a bigger opponent.
The footage provides a rare look at the preparation of a program that was still finding its identity. Harrodsburg had played only four varsity games before arriving in Louisiana, yet the Pioneers were preparing to compete on a stage far beyond anything the young program had previously experienced.
Following the game, Head Coach Herve Kouna addresses his team in the locker room and puts the moment into perspective. Kouna reminds his players that they had a purpose for being on that stage and challenges them to understand that the opportunity represented something greater than the final score.
Dean of Students Eric Carter also speaks to the team following the game, offering encouragement and perspective to a group of players who had just experienced one of the first major milestones in Pioneer Basketball history.
For a varsity basketball program playing only the fifth game of its existence, the trip represented an extraordinary early chapter. A team competing in the USCAA and still establishing itself in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, had traveled to Louisiana and stepped onto an NCAA Division I floor.
The result on the scoreboard was only one part of the story. The experience gave the original Pioneers an opportunity to see firsthand what competing on a Division I stage looked and felt like — while providing an early glimpse of the ambition surrounding a program that was only beginning to discover what it could become.
Years later, the footage serves as a time capsule of Pioneer Basketball in its infancy: the preparation before the game, the opportunity on the floor and the perspective shared in the locker room afterward.
This video is preserved as part of the Campbellsville University Harrodsburg Athletics Archive, documenting the people, moments and stories that shaped Pioneer Athletics.
