Wilfred “Billy” Williams was originally from Waco, Texas, but his family moved to Ohio when he was young. He attended Wilberforce University and sang with The Charioteers gospel group from 1930 to 1950. That year he left the group and founded his own quartet. In 1957, he did a remake of the 1951 Fats Waller tune "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter" which earned him a gold record for selling a million copies. “A Crazy Little Palace (That’s My Home)” was released in January, 1956 and reached #49 on Billboard, #50 on Cashbox and #78 on Music Vendor charts. Locally, it reached #1 in Boston and top-10 in Detroit, Minneapolis, New York City, New Orleans, and Milwaukee.
