Classroom management as a substitute teacher can be challenging, especially when students have never met you before! In this video, I'm sharing my 5 favorite classroom management strategies that help me establish respect, build relationships, manage disruptive behavior, and create a calm, positive learning environment.
As a K–12 substitute teacher and teaching artist, I've learned that effective classroom management doesn't have to mean raising your voice, demanding attention, or constantly correcting students.
Instead, I use simple strategies that help students feel respected while establishing clear expectations from the very beginning.
In this video, you'll learn:
✅ How I use a soft start instead of demanding immediate attention
✅ Why understanding classroom social dynamics helps prevent disruptions
✅ How to build relationships and mutual respect with students quickly
✅ How I establish clear values, expectations, and boundaries
✅ How I use my voice, body language, and nonverbal cues to redirect behavior
Whether you're a new substitute teacher, an experienced guest teacher, or a classroom teacher looking for practical classroom management tips, these strategies can help you create a more cooperative and engaged classroom.
You don't have to be the loudest person in the room to be an effective teacher.
I'm Nicole McCall, a K–12 substitute teacher and teaching artist who combines creative movement with educational standards. I love sharing practical teaching strategies that support positive relationships and effective classroom management.
