You're not drowning in distraction. You're drowning in confusion about what belongs to you and what doesn't.
Epictetus drew a line through human experience: on one side, what you control. Your judgments, effort, response. On the other, everything else. The weather, other people, algorithms, outcomes. Your suffering comes from spending emotional energy on the wrong side.
This was hard in Rome. It's deliberately harder now. Every app, notification, and trending topic is engineered to blur that line—to make you feel responsible for things you cannot actually influence. The interface expands your sense of accountability while shrinking your actual control.
This isn't about willpower or focus apps. Willpower fails because the problem isn't personal discipline—it's that the boundary itself has been redrawn by design.
The Stoic answer isn't detachment. It's precision. Care fully about what you can move. Release your grip on what you cannot. Concentrate force where force actually works.
