The route follows the straight line of the cut, a canal linking two rivers. Light rain falls across the reedbeds at first, pattering on the broad leaves of the rushes and the surface of the dykes. The rain soon passes, leaving the air fresh and the marsh dripping. Underfoot, wet rushes and reed stems swish and crunch with each step, a rhythmic, grounding sound. The reedbeds are home to bearded tits and reed warblers, while marsh harriers quarter the marshes nearby. The sky begins to clear as the sun drops, the clouds catching the last light in extraordinary shades of amber and violet. Water voles and otters are resident in the dyke system. The walk continues until the light fades and the marsh sinks into darkness. The cut is a quiet, still place, a corridor of reed and water under a wide, changing sky.
