What do you do when a colonel grabs your arm and walks you out of your own soldier's hospital room — and you outrank him?
What do you do when the man who needs you most is on the other side of those doors, and you choose to stay in the waiting room anyway?
This is the story of a night I flew sixteen hours to sit beside a wounded Gunnery Sergeant, and the morning a colonel removed me from his ICU in front of his entire ward. Two federal agents were waiting in the hallway. The soldier in the bed had four words that stopped everything cold.
• A colonel grabs a woman in civilian clothes and removes her from his surgical ICU — not knowing who she is, what she did, or what it would cost him
• Two DIA agents step off the wall and change the geometry of a hallway without raising their voices once
• A wounded Gunnery Sergeant refuses to accept his Purple Heart unless his commander is standing at the foot of the bed
