COMMON MISTAKE IN FRENCH - DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'SUPPORTER' & 'SOUTENIR' #frenchlesson

Supporter doesn't mean "to support" just like in English. If you say "je supporte ma famille", it doesn't mean "I support my family" but that you tolerate your family. The French verb "supporter" has a negative connotation and is always used when you mean "to tolerate", "to endure", "to put up with" or "to cope with"... Or even "to stand" but in the negative sense. For example: ▪️je ne supporte pas cette fille ! (I can't stand this girl!) ▪️comment fais-tu pour supporter cette chaleur ? (How do you manage to cope with this heat?) Supporter can be used in sports, when you support a team (but is not accepted by the Académie française that considers it as an anglicism). For example, "je supporte les Bleus". If you want to say support just like in English, you can say "soutenir". Soutenir means to give financial, emotional, or psychological support. For example: ▪️il travaille dur pour soutenir sa famille (he works hard to support his family) ▪️je te soutiendrai quoi que tu fasses (I'll support you whatever you do) However, both "supporter" and "soutenir" can be interchangeable when it comes to weight. For example: ▪️On ne peut pas abattre ce mur puisqu'il soutient la structure de la maison. Il faudra installer une poutre pour supporter le poids (we can't demolish this wall because it supports the structure of the house. We'll have to install a beam to support the weight) So now, you know how to say "to support someone" in French & what's the difference between the French verbs "supporter" and "soutenir" 😊 💬 Did you know that?
