You open your eyes in a kitchen, holding a spoon. A stranger says "Hi, love." Ten seconds later, it all starts again.
What if the part of your brain that files new memories simply stopped working? Your childhood, your skills and your guitar songs would all still be there, but nothing new would ever stick. Every joke would be new. Every grudge would be gone before you'd finished it. Every time the dog walked in, it would be the best surprise of your life.
Then comes the price. You can't follow a conversation, you can't read a book, and the notebook in your pocket becomes the only version of you that remembers anything. It isn't pure fiction, either. We look at the two real people who taught science the most about this: a man whose 1953 brain surgery took away his ability to form new memories, and a British musician whose memory lasted somewhere between 7 and 30 seconds. And then, one stormy afternoon, your phone rings...
