You wake up by the Thames in 1858, gagging. Your nose says the river will kill you. Your nose is wrong.
It's late June, one of the hottest summers anyone can remember, and the river at Westminster is London's toilet. You've got jeans, sneakers, a phone with no signal and more knowledge about disease than every doctor in the city. Surely that's enough to survive the richest city in the world?
We follow you day by day, from the first gag to the street pump that tastes wonderful, from a hospital that won't believe in germs to a lodging house full of lice, and on to the summer Parliament had to do something about the smell. It's a real story about cholera, John Snow, the Great Stink and Joseph Bazalgette's sewers. It also shows why your senses, which evolved for a world without cities, are terrible at spotting what actually kills you.
