In 1940, bones were found on Nikumaroro, a deserted island 350 nautical miles from where Amelia Earhart was supposed to land. Satellite images have since shown a strange shape in the island’s lagoon, now called the “Taraia Object”. And this month, an expedition led by Purdue University is on the island to find out what it is.
Before the results come in, here is everything the records say: the 1937 radio log, the search, the bones, and the three main theories about what happened to Earhart and Fred Noonan.
