When evening falls and the village lights disappear, Chernobog begins his nightly work in the dark hall beneath the roots.
One by one, he reads the black lots that carry news of human misfortune: a barn consumed by fire, a harvest destroyed by hail, sorrow that has already entered someone’s home. Chernobog determines how long each hardship will remain. His work is severe but necessary—no grief should endure beyond its appointed limit.
“The Black Lot” presents Chernobog not as a theatrical embodiment of evil, but as the ancient keeper of the world’s darker measure: misfortune, consequence, duration and inevitable conclusion.
The song combines dark Slavic pagan ritual folk with restrained doom-metal elements. A commanding bass-baritone lead represents Chernobog, accompanied by heavy frame drums, bowed gudok, droning gusli, wooden flute and subtle low male responses. Slow distorted guitar chords give the choruses monumental weight without turning the track into conventional modern metal.
Velesa, a dark folk band singing the old spirits back into the world.
