Most people who overspend at the grocery store are buying too many finished products, like sauces, seasoning packets, boxed mixes and frozen meals, and each one does a single job before you have to go back and buy it again. That's the trap, because almost every one of those products is built from a handful of cheap basic ingredients, and the store charges you five or ten times more for doing the last few minutes of work.
I buy about eighteen core groceries, and almost everything I cook at home comes out of those eighteen. Some of them replace a whole aisle of the store on their own. I grew up in a Japanese house, and this is the way my mother shopped and the way I still shop now, and cooking well at home takes far fewer ingredients than most people expect, as long as each one gets used for a lot of different things.
