Is Science Mature? A New Way to Think About Scientific Progress.

Is science mature or are we still missing a fundamental level of understanding? In this video, I explore a proposed way of thinking about maturity—not simply as accumulating knowledge, but as progressing from knowledge and skill toward fluency, optimization, learning, integration, and mastery. Using the five elemental metaphors of Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void, I examine a five-level progression: Earth — State / Foundation: What is? Water — Change / Becoming: What changed? Fire — Action / Response: What happened in response? Wind — Registration / Learning: What was registered? What was learned? Void — Integration / Mastery: How does what was learned become integrated? Science is extraordinarily mature at describing state, change, and action. It also studies information, feedback, learning, and integration extensively. But a deeper question remains: What makes a physical difference become a consequential registration, i.e something capable of influencing what happens next? And beyond that, how might enormous numbers of such registrations become integrated into the unified experience we call consciousness? Through examples from martial arts and the simple experience of smelling coffee, I explore whether registration and integration may represent important frontiers in the continuing maturation of science.
