In 1971, the state of Washington gave maximum-security inmates something no American prison had ever tried. The keys. Real keys. To their own buildings. They elected a government, built motorcycles in the yard, and held banquets behind locked doors where guards were not welcome. Within four years, biker gangs controlled the cellblocks, heroin was sold openly, and a covered breezeway between the housing units had earned its name: Blood Alley.
This is the complete history of the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington. From its founding as a territorial prison in 1886, through its century as Washington's gallows, to the 1970s reform experiment that collapsed into gang rule, officer murders, and the longest lockdown in state history. Two corrections officers killed. Dozens of inmates murdered. And a 130-day lockdown that ended the era of prison reform in Washington for good.
