WHERE BREATH MEETS THE HORIZON — Full Album | Chromatic Harmonica, Orchestra & Balearic | Museca

WHERE BREATH MEETS THE HORIZON Nine Pieces for Chromatic Harmonica, Orchestra and Balearic Atmosphere Museca Where Breath Meets the Horizon explores the chromatic harmonica as a human voice without words—intimate, lyrical, vulnerable, and capable of carrying an entire emotional landscape. The album was inspired in part by the unforgettable orchestral use of harmonica in John Barry’s “Midnight Cowboy,” from the Academy Award-winning film Midnight Cowboy, and by the distinctive harmonica sound of Mike Post and Pete Carpenter’s theme for The Rockford Files, one of my favorite television series of the 1970s. The extraordinary artistry of Toots Thielemans and his ability to establish the chromatic harmonica as a sophisticated lyrical instrument also helped shape the conception of the album. Rather than recreating those musical worlds, Where Breath Meets the Horizon carries their inspiration into a different setting: chromatic harmonica, full strings and orchestra combined with Mediterranean and Café del Mar-inspired Balearic atmosphere. Three ideas form the musical architecture: BREATH — the chromatic harmonica The individual human presence. MEMORY — the orchestra The emotional landscape surrounding what has been lived and remembered. HORIZON — the Balearic environment Movement, distance, sea, light and atmosphere. For most of the album, the harmonica is the singer. Only once, in “Until Breath Becomes Words,” does an actual human voice enter, creating a dialogue between melody and language. The final composition returns entirely to instrumental music, allowing the harmonica to have the final word.
