Sargon built an empire. Later generations rebuilt the man.
This 39-minute documentary follows the Akkadian conqueror, his daughter Enheduanna and his grandson Naram-Sin through conquest, administration, poetry and collapse. His capital has never been found; his royal words survive in later copies; his famous birth story is a much later legend. How much of the founder can we recover?
The phrase “first empire” needs qualification: Egypt was already united, and other Mesopotamian kings had made broad territorial claims. This episode examines what made Akkad distinctive.
