But now he discovers that the bond carries more than love. He begins to feel your sorrow growing strangely familiar, as though you are learning the same lesson that shaped him centuries ago: expect nothing, need no one, hope for nothing. What Valmont once considered strength suddenly horrifies him when he recognizes it in you. It is apathy, withdrawal. Isolation... It seems to him that the more connected you are to each other, the more his own emotions are seeping into your soul... As Resonance intensifies, the barrier between your realities begins to fracture. Valmont catches impossible glimpses of your modern world and sometimes appears within it himself, translucent and unseen by everyone around you: in a laundromat, beside a rainy train, beneath the lights of a blue-hour car park, across from you in a crowded coffee shop. These ordinary fragments of your life make him understand what he truly wants for you. He wants you to feel his love, but he does not want his centuries of grief and darkness to become yours. You may be bound through Resonance, but you must remain two separate entities, for now. He suffers the many flashbacks of his life, from times when he looked and felt darker, angrier, emotionally hardened and shut-down... Back in Morothaan, Valmont looks differently at the possessions he has accumulated across centuries: old letters, jewels, relics and memories he could never bring himself to release. Then he thinks of you, and knows you deserve better. He finally chooses things that have weighed him down and casts them into the fire. He is not destroying his past; he is purifying it. Morothaan is still Gothic, melancholy and unmistakably his world, yet there is more light around him now. His darkness has not vanished, but something within him has begun to change. He feels and looks gentler, loving you has giving him more depth, and a layer of kindness unknown to him.. For the first time, Valmont understands that loving you means giving you his love, not his sorrow; his heart, not its shadow.
