🌊 Something unusual is happening deep beneath the ocean floor off Oregon — and seismologists are getting a clearer look at the hidden structures responsible.
Using seismic data collected beneath the Pacific Northwest, scientists have been able to map structures deep below the seafloor and investigate how the Cascadia Subduction Zone is behaving. Recent research has revealed previously unclear faults, fractures, fluid movement, and changes within the tectonic plates beneath the region.
One 2026 study also found that the Juan de Fuca plate may be shallower beneath northern Oregon than earlier models suggested, which could affect estimates of ground shaking during a future Cascadia megathrust earthquake.
In this video, we'll go beneath Oregon's ocean floor to explain what scientists discovered, how seismic waves reveal hidden structures, and why these findings matter for understanding earthquakes and tsunami risks along the Pacific Northwest.
In this guide you’ll learn:
🌊 What scientists discovered beneath Oregon's seafloor
🔬 How seismologists use seismic waves to see deep underground
🧩 What the Juan de Fuca plate is doing beneath the region
⚠️ Why faults, fluids, and fractures matter for earthquake science
🌎 How these discoveries could improve Cascadia earthquake models
🌊 Why scientists are studying the area for future earthquake and tsunami hazards
The Cascadia Subduction Zone remains one of the most closely studied earthquake systems in North America. New seafloor instruments and improved seismic imaging are giving scientists a much clearer picture of what is happening deep beneath the Pacific Northwest.
