Tesla Cybercab is my only ride in Austin for an entire week, and by Day 3, the cost is starting to change how I use it.
The rules are simple: Cybercab and walking. For seven days, I’m documenting what it actually looks like to depend on a driverless taxi for getting around, meeting friends, going out, and getting back to my hotel. How convenient is it? What does it cost? And how much do I have to adjust my plans to make it work?
Today, I head downtown, end up with some extra walking after my dropoff, capture Cybercabs around the city, and meet friends for a drink. Getting picked up afterward brings another awkward moment when the car stops in the road despite having a large shoulder nearby.
With fares higher than I expected, I’m also starting to think twice about how many rides I take and what I go out to do. That’s becoming one of the most interesting parts of this experiment: seeing how the price affects my decisions when Cybercab is my only ride.
Follow along as I work through a full week of living this way in Austin, sharing the rides I enjoy and the practical frustrations along the way.
Would you try a week using only Cybercab and walking? What would your daily transportation budget be?
