Once ten years ago. In December at Christmas. And again today, in the rain. It’s almost exactly the same city I remember. Same chaos. Same rhythm. Just more foreigners and internationalization. Especially Japan for some reason. I'm all for everything Japanese, but in Japan, not Vietnam. It feels like Saigon didn’t change, the audience did. Whatever that means. The only real way to understand this city is on a motorbike. Nothing else comes close. Grab works, but it’s training wheels. If you didn’t move yourself through traffic—reading gaps, feeling the flow—you didn’t really experience Saigon. And anyone who leaves without riding should never pretend they “understand” what it's all about. Never. One hard rule: never eat near tourist areas. Ever. It’s overpriced and mediocre at best. Same goes for staying there. The best parts of Saigon aren’t downtown. They’re 30 minutes out. Quieter. Cheaper. Better food. More real. That’s where the city actually lives.
