2 MILLION YEARS AGO, OUR ANCESTORS WERE ON THE MENU

Two million years ago, our ancestors weren't the hunters of Africa. They were the hunted, and the fossils prove it. A child's skull with two holes from a leopard's fangs, a toddler snatched by an eagle, and a hyena as heavy as a lioness: this is the real evidence of when we were prey. In 1949, fossil hunters in a South African cave called Swartkrans found part of a young skull with two round holes 33 mm apart. For years it was read as a Stone Age murder, proof that our ancestors were born killers. Then the scientist Bob Brain matched it to a leopard's jaw from the same cave, and the whole story of human origins flipped. Next comes the Taung Child, the first early human ever found in Africa. Marks inside its eye sockets went unnoticed for some 80 years, until a study of crowned eagle nests in a West African rainforest showed what they meant. After that we go to Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania: a horned crocodile named the "human-eater", a fossil foot that experts still argue over, and a 2025 study in which artificial intelligence identified the animal that hunted Homo habilis, the first famous toolmaker. Then we follow the first humans out of Africa to Dmanisi in Georgia, to Spain and to Dragon Bone Hill in China. There a giant short-faced hyena of around 110 kg may explain bones once blamed on cannibals. And we look at how that ancient fear still lives in us today. And on the same South African hill there's one more clue: 270 burned bones in a cave that belonged to leopards.
