Queen Idia was one of the most important women in the history of the Benin Kingdom. She was the mother of Oba Esigie and is remembered as the first woman to hold the title of Iyoba, or Queen Mother. Her influence reached far beyond the royal household. Tradition remembers her as a trusted adviser, a politically important figure, and a woman whose support helped strengthen Esigie’s position during a difficult period in Benin history. Her story is closely connected with the struggles surrounding Esigie’s rise to power and the conflicts that followed. Idia is remembered not simply as the mother of a king, but as someone whose judgment, loyalty, and strength helped shape the stability of the kingdom. The creation of the title Iyoba marked a lasting recognition of her importance. From that point onward, the Queen Mother held a distinct and respected place within the political and ceremonial structure of Benin. Today, Idia remains one of the most recognizable figures associated with the Benin Kingdom. Her memory survives through oral tradition, court history, and the famous ivory and bronze representations connected with the royal court. Her story is one of influence, resilience, and the power that can exist beside the throne without always standing at its center.
