Sasol Signatures | 'The Laundry of a Nation' wins big

In Sphumelele Zondi's winning work, a row of garments becomes an archive and showcases the little things that remind us of home. The 26-year-old Johannesburg-based artist is the overall winner of the 2026 Sasol New Signatures Visual Arts Competition for her mixed-media piece, The laundry of a nation (2026). For 36 years Sasol has sponsored the competition, more than 60 years since the Association of Arts Pretoria first opened this door to young artists, with work collected at eight points across the country.
