RIDE KENYA EP. 18 | MUTHAIGA to KCA UNIVERSITY on Thika Superhighway | Nairobi’s Busiest Road

After the quiet streets of Muthaiga, we join one of East Africa’s busiest roads and ride all the way to KCA University in Ruaraka. This ride covers flyovers, factories, a university campus and the daily flow of Nairobi’s northeast corridor. The road itself: Thika Superhighway is an 8-lane highway, with 12 lanes in some sections, linking Nairobi to the industrial town of Thika. Construction began in January 2009 and it was inaugurated in November 2012 by President Mwai Kibaki. The stretch from Muthaiga Roundabout onwards was designed as a high-speed highway with limited access and exits, and the roundabout itself has a flyover. What to look out for along the way: Ruaraka, Nairobi’s industrial hub. Ruaraka is an industrial and residential suburb about 8 kilometres northeast of the city centre, off Thika Road, and it includes Allsops, Baba Dogo and Tusker Village. Its major employers include East African Breweries Limited and Pepsi Cola (EA) Limited, and the General Service Unit headquarters is along Thika Road. A beer-making legacy. Ruaraka began in 1922, when two Welsh brothers, Charles and George Hurst, set up the first brewery in British Kenya, Kenya Breweries, on the banks of the river. Wikipedia KCA University, our destination. KCA University is a private, non-profit institution on Thika Road in Ruaraka. It began in 1989 as the Kenya College of Accountancy, set up by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. It was awarded a university charter on 1 March 2013. The campus is about 15 minutes from the city centre. From leafy suburb to bustling highway to campus gates, this is Nairobi at full speed.
