RIDE KENYA EP. 19 | ALLSOPS to GARDEN CITY on Thika Road | From Breweries to Big-City Shopping

We’re staying on Thika Road and picking up the ride from Allsops, in Nairobi’s industrial heartland of Ruaraka, then riding on to one of the city’s best-known shopping destinations, Garden City. Allsops and Ruaraka: Allsops is part of Ruaraka, an industrial and residential suburb about 8 kilometres northeast of the city centre. It began in 1922 when two Welsh brothers set up Kenya Breweries, the first brewery in British Kenya. Kenya Breweries later bought Allsops and Pilsner to form East African Breweries Limited. Garden City: Garden City Mall is off Exit 7 on Thika Road, next to the East African Breweries headquarters. It opened on 28 May 2015 and was the largest mall in East and Central Africa until Two Rivers Mall opened in 2017. Garden City is a mixed-use development, with housing on the same grounds as the shops. Its central park has a children’s play area and space for entertainment events. It also has East Africa’s largest IMAX cinema. The developer has added the Garden City Business Park next door, which includes a private hospital, a four-star hotel and grade-A offices. The road: Thika Superhighway, an 8-lane highway opened in 2012, links Nairobi to Thika, and this section is a major commuter route. Expect a mix of heavy traffic, interchanges, estates and big retail.
