This video features a newly built 0-4-4 Single Fairlie locomotive in 7-1/4" gauge, running at the Castledare Miniature Railway in Perth, Western Australia. The Single Fairlie configuration was chosen for practical reasons. It allows a long wheelbase to accommodate a comfortably sized driver's footwell and large accessible ashpan, while allowing flexibility to negotiate curves. It also provides smooth riding, which contributes to a rewarding driving experience. The steel boiler has a 10-inch nominal diameter barrel, and an internal capacity of around 40 litres. Cylinders are 75mm bore x 100mm stroke. The flexible steam pipe to the articulated power bogie is braided convoluted stainless steel hose, arranged in a U-shaped curve to provide flexibility in all axes. Exhaust steam pipes are rubber marine exhaust hose. The locomotive is intended for use on the intensive passenger hauling operations at the Castledare Miniature Railway, where robustness and practicality are essential requirements. The livery is based loosely on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in the UK, hence the name: "Barney".
