The Civil War widens in the second half of 1861 — from Wilson’s Creek in Missouri to Ball’s Bluff on the Potomac, coastal victories and a diplomatic crisis with Britain. Chapter 3 follows August–December 1861, picking up where Chapter 2 ended. At Wilson’s Creek, Nathaniel Lyon attacks a larger Southern army and is killed. Across Missouri, western Virginia and the coast, both sides search for an advantage while Lincoln faces growing military and political pressures. IN THIS CHAPTER • Wilson’s Creek and the fighting on Bloody Hill • Lexington, Frémont’s emancipation proclamation and his removal • Robert E. Lee in western Virginia, Carnifex Ferry and Cheat Mountain • Hatteras Inlet, Port Royal and Grant at Belmont • Ball’s Bluff, Edward Baker’s death and the political consequences • McClellan’s army around Washington • The Trent affair and the danger of war with Britain • The armies’ positions at the end of 1861 This is a campaign-wide overview, connecting battles with strategy, slavery, politics and diplomacy. Background and later consequences are included where needed. Catch up with “American Civil War 1861 - First Campaigns & Bull Run - Chapter 2”, then continue the series with John Howard History. It is not an original recording or the voice of anyone involved in the events. AI-generated historical reconstructions appear in the presentation and thumbnail. These are explanatory illustrations, not archival photographs. The thumbnail combines a representation of Lincoln with two separate battle settings; it does not depict Lincoln commanding troops at either battlefield. Period photographs, portraits and later prints are identified separately. Map positions and movements are interpretive reconstructions; uncertain numbers and source limitations are discussed in the closing section.
