How quickly do we decide who someone is by what we see on the outside?
In this guided meditation, we explore the mind’s tendency to form immediate judgments about ourselves and others. We practice noticing those judgments without fighting them, relaxing our attachment to the story, and returning to kindness.
A person’s appearance, manner, status, confidence, or first impression can never reveal the whole person. Buddhist teachings use the image of fruit to make the same point: something can appear ripe on the outside while being rotten within, while something unimpressive on the outside can be ripe within.
Through loving-kindness, we can learn to leave a little more space between seeing and judging—a space for curiosity, understanding, and wisdom.
May we learn to see beyond appearances and meet ourselves and others with greater kindness.
