Using about 1,600 photographs taken from the International Space Station by Sophie Adenot last September 19, we created this #timelapse. This is a nighttime flyover of the #ISS from the United States to Brazil, captured by a camera pointed toward the “back of the Station”. At the beginning, you can also spot a striking aurora borealis over Canada; over Central and South America the view is somewhat obscured by thunderstorm clouds (the flashes you see are lightning). The intense orange lights visible over Venezuela are gas flares from industrial facilities, typically used at natural gas and oil extraction or processing sites to burn off excess flammable gases produced during operations. Also, be careful not to mistake the camera sensor’s hot pixels (static bright dots) for actual stars, which instead move in accordance with the #ISS’s motion The video covers a 27 minutes time span and is therefore sped up about 12 times compared to the actual speed of the Station. ---------------- The AstronautiCAST YouTube channel is run by passionate volunteers on an unpaid basis.
