Kayla Sedoskey, a 23-year-old mother from Monroe, Michigan, was lured to an abandoned juvenile detention center by someone she thought was a date. Six people were convicted. This case breakdown covers the investigation, the suspects' behavior, and what happened in court.
1. The Background
Victim: Kayla Marie Sedoskey, 23, Monroe, MI, mother of a 3-year-old son.
Defendants: Steven Douglas Bails Jr. (45, her ex-boyfriend), Narena Bails (25, his wife), Brin Smith (21), Kaylyn Ramsey (33, Wakeman, OH), Sierra Bemis (24), Alexander Feko (26).
Relationships: Sedoskey and the defendants had been roommates. Steven and Narena obtained a marriage license in February 2023.
Motive: Police cite "multiple disagreements." Prosecutors say the reason remains unclear, but evidence suggests a possible "wedding present" or revenge over an argument with Ramsey.
2. The Crime
When and where: The night of Feb. 15, 2023, at the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Detention Center, Frenchtown Township, Monroe County, MI.
Planning: Smith posed as a romantic interest, picked Sedoskey up, and drove her to Boysville. Steven Bails, Ramsey, and Bemis were waiting. Narena Bails monitored a police scanner at the apartment.
The killing: Sedoskey was shot three times with a suspected .22-caliber handgun, including once at point-blank range to the head.
Afterward: The next day, four defendants returned to hide the body and mask the smell with fragrances. Feko disposed of the gun.
3. The Investigation
Discovery: High school students exploring the building found her body, wrapped in a tarp, on March 2, 2023. It was ruled a homicide.
Investigation: Michigan State Police ran a year-long investigation with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals.
Flight and arrests: Steven Bails, Narena Bails, and Smith fled the state. The Bailses were arrested in North Carolina after a standoff of several hours. Smith was caught in Ohio.
Testimony: Bemis, Feko, and Narena Bails testified against Steven Bails at trial.
Open question: Police never publicly said who fired the shots.
4. Verdicts and Sentences
