Can a 30-year-old Cannondale become the perfect everyday bike? This 1994 Cannondale H300 was already a solid, USA-made hybrid, but its original 3×6 drivetrain, cantilever brakes and cockpit made it feel every bit of its age. I modernized it into a simple, comfortable 1×9 bike using just $132 in new parts—and several good used components from my parts bin. The upgrades include: • New 700c rear wheel with a modern freehub • Shimano 11–34 9-speed cassette • Shimano XT rear derailleur • Shimano Alivio 9-speed shifter • 40T single-chainring crankset • Avid V-brakes with new Jagwire pads • Swept riser handlebar and Ergon grips • New chain, cables and housing The existing Kenda Topline 700×38 tires stayed on the bike. The build wasn’t completely trouble-free. My first bottom bracket placed the 40T chainring directly against the chainstay, forcing me to rethink the crank spacing before I could finish it. Would you modernize this Cannondale or leave it original? Let me know in the comments. For more practical bike repairs, upgrades and budget builds, subscribe to DIY Mountain Bike.
