One police technician says the swab of a red stain on the bathroom door frame was never taken. The technician who trained her says it was taken, boxed, and lost. Then the medical examiner takes the stand. Faith Hedgepeth was 19, a UNC Chapel Hill student found dead in September 2012 in the off-campus apartment she shared with her best friend. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares is on trial in Durham County Superior Court on the charges, and he is presumed innocent. Day 3 of the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial is the evidence: what Chapel Hill police took out of that apartment, what happened to it after, and what the medical examiner found. Tamika Price, on her first case as an evidence technician, told the jury the clean swab that should have followed the stain's field test was never collected: "that step was missed." Sheleathea Quick, who trained her, told the jury it was collected, put in a white box, and then lost. Price says she told only Quick it could not be found. Quick says she never told the lead investigator, Sgt. Matthews. Which account is right, and why did the lead investigator never hear it?
