It could be your friend. It could be your dog. It could be you. In episode 4 of Creature Decoded we take apart John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), the monster that copies anything it infects, and find the real animals that already use every one of its tricks: copying, sneaking in, surviving in pieces, taking over cells, and waiting in the ice. You'll meet the mimic octopus, femme fatale fireflies, the cuckoo, the large blue butterfly that lives inside an ant nest, planarians that regrow from a tiny piece, sponges that rebuild themselves, sea slugs that steal from their food, and tiny animals revived after tens of thousands of years in permafrost. Then we ask the question fans have argued about for over forty years: who is the Thing at the end? This video is commentary and education. It contains no film footage or stills: images are photos of real animals, places and people shared under Creative Commons licenses or in the public domain.
