Roots Africa believes Africa does not need charity. It needs changemakers.
Young Africans are not waiting for the future of agriculture. They are building it.
On 26 August 2026, Roots Africa brought together university students, changemakers, farmers, mentors, institutional partners, government representatives and agricultural entrepreneurs at Gulu University in Northern Uganda for the 2026 Roots Africa Annual Symposium, Exhibition, Quiz & Pitch Competition.
This one hour documentary-style event recap follows the day from beginning to end.
You will see the cultural welcome, university and partner engagement, changemakers and farmers sharing what has changed in their communities, agricultural products developed by students, the Roots Africa Quiz Competition, youth-led enterprises pitching for catalytic support, and the awards and reflections that closed the day.
The exhibition featured practical innovations in food processing, value addition, animal production, natural products, agricultural services and emerging agribusinesses.
The Pitch Competition challenged young entrepreneurs to answer real questions about customers, production, raw materials, quality, scalability, certification, supply chains and profitability.
The Quiz Competition tested knowledge built through the Roots Africa Changemakers Program, including agriculture, entrepreneurship, community development, leadership and the Roots Africa transformation model.
But this event was about more than competition.
At the center of Roots Africa's work is a simple idea:
Young Africans should have the opportunity to stay, lead and build.
We work with universities to help students move knowledge beyond the classroom and into farming communities, where changemakers work alongside farmers to test ideas, establish enterprises, strengthen market access and increase household income.
Our long-term goal is not to create communities that depend on Roots Africa.
It is to build young leaders, enterprises and community systems strong enough to continue without us.
That is our walk-away test.
If you are a university, agribusiness, manufacturer, researcher, investor, foundation, government agency, mentor, technical expert or organization interested in helping young African entrepreneurs and farming communities grow, we would love to hear from you.
You can support by mentoring a changemaker, hosting a technical placement, helping an enterprise develop standard operating procedures, opening access to a laboratory or production facility, supporting market connections, investing in a youth-led venture, or partnering with Roots Africa.
