Before they were recorded as cargo, they were people with relationships, knowledge, work, memory, and lives of their own.
This documentary examines how the transatlantic slave trade turned human beings into prices—and how violence, commerce, law, finance, plantation demand, and distant consumption sustained that transformation. It follows the system from western and central Africa across the Atlantic, contrasts an estimated 12.5 million embarkations with roughly 10.7 million arrivals, and includes attributed excerpts from Olaudah Equiano’s published account.
It also follows resistance: escape, maroon communities, collective care, cultural survival, the 1791 uprising in Saint-Domingue, and Haitian independence in 1804.
The central question is not only who committed cruelty, but how unequal forms of participation, profit, and indifference made that cruelty ordinary.
History reveals what we choose.
