Gianni Versace's Murder Was Much More PREVENTABLE Than You Thought

Gianni Versace's Murder Was Much More PREVENTABLE Than You Thought Officially, Gianni Versace was killed by a stranger on the steps of his house on Ocean Drive, and the case closed eight days later on a houseboat. The record tells a longer story. On June 12, 1997, the FBI put Andrew Cunanan on its Ten Most Wanted list. He was already living on Miami Beach. On July 7 he pawned a gold coin at a shop called Cash on the Beach, under his real name, with his signature and his thumbprint. The shop mailed a copy to the police, as Florida law required. On July 11 a sandwich shop worker recognized him and called 911, and he walked out before an officer arrived. On July 15 Versace walked home from the News Cafe with five magazines under his arm. Then came a will that left half the company to a girl of eleven, and a partner of fifteen years who got a fraction of what it promised. And somewhere in a police department, a pawn slip was waiting in a pile.
