The Conflict Whisperer: Ep. 6 - Converse Controversy: Why We See Different Things

How can two people look at the exact same image and see something completely different? A controversial Converse campaign image has sparked radically different reactions. Some viewers say they immediately saw imagery associated with hanging or lynching. Others looked at the same image and saw nothing of the sort. But this episode of The Conflict Whisperer isn't about telling you who's right or wrong. I'm more interested in what's happening underneath the disagreement. Using the communication concepts of encoding and decoding, I explore how creators send meaning through images and symbols while audiences interpret those messages through their own experiences, histories and cultural contexts. We also get into the harder questions: What happens when intent and impact don't match? When does "that's not what I meant" stop being enough? What happens when we assume we know someone's motive? And how can an organization move beyond crisis response toward actual repair? Because repair isn't simply finding the right words after something goes wrong. It requires curiosity about what happened, what was intended, what was received, what may have been missed, and whether anything needs to change.
