Back in the workshop as we continue the restoration of a historic Wallis & Steevens steam engine! In this video, we're machining a replacement shaft to length on a Kearns horizontal boring mill before cutting four keyways into a second shaft — all part of getting this classic steam engine back where it belongs. 🔧 A second attempt at getting it right! The first shaft had an undercut machined in the wrong position, meaning we had to go back and rethink the job. Engineering and restoration work doesn't always go to plan, and sometimes you have to learn from mistakes, start again and make sure the replacement components are machined correctly. In this video, you'll see traditional engineering and precision machining in action as we work on these important components for our Wallis & Steevens steam engine restoration. ⚙️ In this video: Machining a shaft to the correct length Using a Kearns horizontal boring mill Traditional machine shop engineering Precision shaft machining and metal cutting Cutting four keyways into a second shaft Keyway machining and mechanical power transmission components Rectifying an incorrectly positioned undercut Manufacturing and fitting replacement steam engine parts Vintage machinery restoration and mechanical engineering The challenges of restoring a historic steam engine Restoring vintage steam engines takes patience, precision and plenty of problem-solving. From getting dimensions right to machining keyways and correcting mistakes, every component needs to be right if we're going to bring this historic machine back to life. If you're interested in steam engine restoration, vintage engineering, horizontal boring mills, manual machining, keyway cutting, shaft manufacturing, traditional machine tools, mechanical engineering and industrial heritage, you're in the right place! 👍 If you enjoy seeing traditional engineering, heavy machining and historic machinery being brought back to life, please LIKE the video, SUBSCRIBE to Vintage Iron UK and hit the bell so you don't miss the next instalment of this restoration. 💬 Question for fellow engineers: Have you ever had to remake a component because a machining operation was carried out in the wrong position?
