You're thirteen, standing very still in a palace hall in Seoul, and the king's mother is choosing his wife. The next queen of Joseon will come from your father's house. Her name is Inhyeon, and you're about to live her life. This is the true story of Queen Inhyeon (1667–1701), the queen of Joseon Korea who was thrown out of the palace in 1689 so that a concubine, Jang Ok-jeong, could take her place. She spent five winters behind a locked gate, was brought back in 1694, and died at thirty-four. Only one sin could get a queen thrown out: jealousy. This video follows her through every chapter of her life, from the day she was chosen to the night the king's order went out about Jang. If you know the story from Dong Yi, Jang Ok-jung, Living in Love or Queen Inhyeon's Man, here is what the court records actually say. A note on sources. Queen Inhyeon (仁顯王后), Queen Jang (Jang Ok-jeong, 張玉貞, Hui-bin) and King Sukjong were real, and so are the dates and events in this story: the queen's selection and wedding in 1681, the death of Queen Dowager Myeongseong in 1684, the birth of the crown prince in 1688, the 1689 deposition (Gisa Hwanguk) and the eighty-six officials who petitioned for her, the burning of her seal and robes, her five years in her family's house, her restoration in 1694 (Gapsul Hwanguk), her illness and death on the fourteenth day of the eighth lunar month of 1701, the 1701 witchcraft trial and the order that no concubine could ever become queen come from the Annals of King Sukjong (肅宗實錄) and its supplement (補闕正誤). Those Annals were compiled by the faction that sided with Inhyeon and opposed Jang, so the confessions (taken under torture), the story that Choi Suk-bin secretly told the king, and the words put in Jang's mouth are the record's version, not a neutral one. The scenes inside the palace (the night before the wedding, the evening Jang hides behind the queen, the faces and feelings) are dramatized; the words of the king's mother about jealousy are an invention based on how queens were deposed before her. The Erased tells the stories of women history didn't bother to write down. Subscribe for the next life. Did the king ever love Inhyeon, or did he only need her?
