Our live webcam offers a 24/7 view of the northeast corridor through East Greenwich, RI, at MP 172, capturing the trains as they fly by. Train movements include Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Acela, the MBTA Commuter Rail, and the Providence & Worcester Railroad WODA/DAWO. Track 1 is far with a track speed of 110 MPH, and 2 is close with a track speed of 95 MPH. East Greenwich has been part of the Northeast’s rail story since the early 1830s, when the New York, Providence & Boston Railroad (NYP&B) laid tracks through town—making it one of the earliest rail-connected communities in Rhode Island. By the late 1800s, the line came under the control of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, which transformed it into a high-capacity mainline. This route was heavily used for both passenger and freight service well into the 20th century. In 1971, Amtrak took over intercity passenger service and continued using this line as part of its vital Northeast Corridor. With construction ending in 2001, the corridor through Rhode Island—including East Greenwich—was electrified to accommodate Acela Express high-speed service, allowing speeds up to 150 MPH in some areas and 110 MPH through East Greenwich. Today, the tracks at Milepost 172 remain busy with a thrilling mix of Amtrak Acela, Northeast Regional, MBTA Commuter Rail, and Providence & Worcester Railroad freight trains.
