Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)
Toccata in D minor, BWV 538 — “Dorian”
Gottfried Thore Drywa | Organ
Historic Wiegleb Organ
St. Gumbertus, Ansbach, Germany
Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata in D minor, BWV 538, commonly known as the Dorian Toccata, stands among the most remarkable examples of his monumental organ writing. Its striking rhythmic vitality, architectural clarity, and uncompromising contrapuntal discipline reveal a musical language of extraordinary concentration and expressive power.
Unlike the more freely conceived toccatas of the North German organ tradition, BWV 538 is distinguished by its almost orchestral dialogue between the manuals, its insistent rhythmic patterns, and the structural independence of the pedal. The alternation of contrasting musical textures unfolds with remarkable precision, combining Baroque rhetorical intensity with an unmistakable sense of formal unity.
The designation “Dorian” was not given by Bach himself. It became associated with the work through its key signature, which omits the B-flat normally expected in D minor. Despite this historical nickname, the composition belongs firmly to Bach's mature tonal and contrapuntal language.
This performance was recorded at the historic Wiegleb organ in St. Gumbertus, Ansbach, Germany. Built by Johann Christoph Wiegleb in the eighteenth century, the instrument represents an important chapter in the history of German organ building. Its distinctive tonal character, clarity of articulation, and rich historical associations provide a compelling setting for Bach's organ music.
Gottfried Thore Drywa, international concert organist and pianist, performs Bach's Dorian Toccata with particular attention to the relationship between contrapuntal architecture, rhythmic articulation, and the expressive possibilities of the historic instrument.
