The first Dutch ships at Bantam in 1596 shout and stamp about the price of pepper, and with every shout the price goes up, until the regent keeps the captain as a guest and the Dutch pay for him in silver. A laughing gamelan song.
"Clumsy Strangers of Bantam" by Bronze Gong Orchestra, from the radio of Winds of Wander, made for the game with Suno.
Winds of Wander is an age-of-sail trading and adventure game on the real coasts of the world, from 1402 to 1799. In development, by one maker.

Lyrics
Four ships came in on the rainy wind with sails the grey of smoke,
And forty men stepped out at once, and all at once they spoke,
They shouted "pepper", shouted "price", they stamped about in boots,
And the regent smiled the patient smile he keeps for storms... and new recruits.
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Came with silver and came without grace, (no grace!)
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Every shout put a smile on the pepper-man's face! (hey!)
The Chinese weighed and said no word, the Gujarati bowed,
The Portuguese, who'd come before, stood whispering in the crowd,
The captain called the regent names a captain should not say,
And the price of pepper listened... and it rose a little every day.
And the price of pepper listened... and it rose a little every day.
He frowned! Up!
He shouted! Up!
He slammed a door! Up, up!
He swore he'd sail away! Then why is he still here?
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Came with silver and came without grace, (no grace!)
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Every shout put a smile on the pepper-man's face! (hey!)
"Not one coin more! Do you hear me? NOT ONE!"
So the regent begged him, as a guest, to rest inside our walls,
With a roof, a mat, a bowl of rice, and soldiers in the halls,
And the ships that grudged a coin for pepper paid in silver for the man,
The dearest thing they bought in Java... was the captain! (ha!) That's the plan!
They sailed for home with half a hold, and fever in the rest,
They sailed for home with half a hold, and fever in the rest,
And still, they say, the voyage paid, and paid so very well,
That a hundred ships came after, from the same grey land of rain,
And they've learned to bow a little... and the pepper-man learned Dutch. (again!)
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Came with silver and came without grace, (no grace!)
The clumsy strangers of Bantam! (hey, hey!)
Every shout put a smile on the pepper-man's face! (hey!)
And the price of pepper listened... and it rose a little every day.
