Teachers in America are giving far more to education than most people ever see. In this video, we look at the hidden cost of teaching—from unpaid teacher work and the teacher pay gap to financial stress, second jobs, burnout, and the difficult question many educators eventually face: Can I afford to keep teaching?
Teachers are contracted to work a limited number of days each year, but the research discussed in this video paints a much different picture of the actual teacher workload. Teachers routinely put in hours beyond their contracted workday, creating hundreds of additional hours of work across the school year. At the same time, teachers earn significantly less in weekly wages than similarly educated professionals.
But teacher pay is only part of the story.
When teachers continually give more time, energy, and attention than they're compensated for, the cost can begin showing up everywhere else—in their finances, marriages, families, health, classrooms, and ability to enjoy life outside of school. Financial stress can follow teachers into the classroom, while some educators take second jobs, tutor, coach, or work during the summer simply to make their household budgets work.
And eventually, teacher burnout can lead to an even bigger question: Can I keep doing this?
In this video, John shares his own experience with chronic stress and the moment that forced him to confront what teaching was costing him. He also discusses why being called to teach doesn't mean you have to destroy yourself trying to remain faithful to that calling.
Teacher Talk with John is a faith-based organization built around Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for from it flow the issues of life.” Guarding your heart sometimes means honestly examining what teaching is costing you and deciding what needs to change.
In this video, you'll learn:
• How unpaid teacher work adds up across a school year
• Why teacher workload and teacher pay create a difficult imbalance
• How financial stress can affect teachers inside and outside the classroom
• Why some teachers take second jobs just to make the numbers work
• How teacher stress and burnout can affect your family, health, and quality of life
• Why leaving teaching isn't always the only option
• How boundaries and intentional decisions can help teachers regain control
• Why protecting yourself doesn't mean you've stopped caring about your students
Our mission at Teacher Talk with John is to help educators navigate the realities of teaching, protect what matters most, and make intentional decisions about their lives and careers while remembering that their value extends far beyond the classroom.
