My father and I flew all the way from Hungary to one of Europe’s most remote regions: Finnish Lapland. We took a taxi to Kuttura, a village at the end of the road where our adventure would begin. From there, we paddled down the Ivalojoki, which has a rich gold-mining history dating back to the late 19th century.
This was our first-ever packrafting trip, so everything was new to us, from the sport to the Arctic terrain. We faced whitewater rapids, rain, and a lack of sunlight for charging our batteries and drying our gear. We met a small group of adventurers, shared a fried fish dinner, and had a great time together.
We had planned a slightly shorter route to make sure we had enough time to gain experience and finish the trip. However, we managed to keep a good pace, so we had the last day to ourselves to relax, and I even hiked up a fell alone.
We finished at the village of Tolonen, where we were picked up and taken to a tiny resort down the river.
