Three blankets on top of you, one thin sheet under you, and at three in the morning your back is cold. It is not the air in the room. It is the mattress, pulling the heat out of your back all night, and the blankets on top cannot stop a leak that is underneath you. My mother raised six children in a house with no heater, and in the cold months she made every bed backwards. The thickest blanket went where nobody could see it. Nine ways she kept a bed warm with no heat, and the first one is folded in your closet right now.
THE NINE
1️⃣ The San Marcos UNDER the sheet. Flat on the bare mattress, the bottom sheet over it. Your weight cannot squash it, so the leak closes where it is.
2️⃣ The cardboard under the mattress. On slats or a metal frame, a sheet of cardboard closes the cold road up from the floor.
3️⃣ The bed off the outside wall, and off the floor. Inside walls are warm on both faces. Cold settles low.
4️⃣ Heat the bed before you get in. The brick then, la bolsa now, with her four rules: hot not boiling, two thirds full, cover on, check the rubber for cracks.
5️⃣ The rice sock at the feet. Warm the feet and the whole body believes it.
6️⃣ The order of the layers, and the envelope. Cotton next to you, heavy flat blankets next, the puffy one on top where nothing presses it, a flat sheet over all, foot and one side tucked tight.
7️⃣ Socks, the gorro, and your nose OUT. You breathe out a pint of water a night; under the covers it goes into the blankets.
8️⃣ Get in warm. Blankets keep heat, they do not make it. Dry nightclothes, warmed under the bottle. Never wet hair.
9️⃣ One room, and the door closed. The small heat of two bodies stays in the small room where it is needed.
THE HONEST WORD: three tricks going around this winter she would never have allowed. The candle in a blanket tent. The hand-warmer packet on bare skin in bed. The fort on the floor at seventy. Electric blanket rules: auto shutoff, good condition, never all night on high, never on a baby's bed. Never the oven. And if you are watching for your mother: shivering she cannot stop, slurred words, confusion is the ambulance now. If the house will not hold heat, call 211 for a warming center.
Who profits: the heated mattress pad, the electric blanket you replace every three winters, the space heater by the bed, the weighted blanket, the smart blanket. Every one sells you something to put on top, because on top is where they can sell it. Nobody makes a dollar the night you fold a blanket you already own and put it under the sheet. That is not a failure of the business. That is the business.
Tonight, do one: strip the bed, lay the thickest blanket you own flat on the mattress, and make the bed over it. Tell me in the morning if your back was cold.
What did your mother put on the bed in winter? Tell me, and your county. I read every one.
