Why Do Americans Avoid Eating Carp? The most farmed fish on Earth is missing from the American seafood counter. Billions of people eat carp every year. In the US, agencies pay people to kill it - and once poisoned whole lakes to erase it. But in 1877, America threw a party for this fish. The US Fish Commission imported German carp, and Rudolph Hessel raised them in ponds beside the Washington Monument. In 1882 alone, 260,000 carp were shipped by rail to 298 of 301 congressional districts. Thirty years later the miracle was "trash fish" - and the label stuck for a century.
